 I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.

나는 오늘 우리나라 역사에 가장 위대한 행진으로 기록될 행사에 여러분과 함께 참가한 것을 기쁘게 생각합니다.

 Five score years ago, a great American,/ in whose symbolic shadow we stand today,/ signed the Emancipation Proclamation. / This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice.

백년 전에 위대한 한 미국인이, / 오늘 우리는 그를 상징하는 건물의 그늘에 서 있습니다, / 노예해방 선언서에 서명을 했습니다. / 이 역사적인 선언은 불의의 불꽃에 그을려 온 수많은 흑인 노예들에게 위대한 희망의 횃불이었습다.

 It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity./ But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free;/ one hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.

이 선언은 노예로서 살아온 기나긴 밤의 끝을 알리는 기쁨에 찬 여명이었습니다./ 그러나 일백년이 지난 후, 흑인들은 여전히 자유롭지 못합니다./ 백년이 지난 후에도, 흑인들이 슬프게도 여전히 격리라는 쇠고랑과 차별이라는 쇠사슬에 매여 제대로 생활할 수 없습니다.

 One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity;/ one hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself in exile in his own land./ So we've come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.

 In a sense we've come to our nation's capital to cash a check./ When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, / they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.

 어떤 면에서, 우리는 수표를 현금으로 바꾸기 위해서 우리나라의 수도인 이곳에 온 것입니다./ 이 나라의 개척자들이 헌법과 독립선언문에 훌륭한 구절들을 적어 넣었을 때, / 그들은 모든 미국인이 상속받게 될 약속어음에 서명한 것입니다.

 This not was the promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

 이 어음은 모든 사람에게, 맞습니다, 백인뿐 아니라 흑인에게도 생명과 자유와 행복의 추구라는 절대적 권리를 보장해 줄 것을 약속했습니다.

 

 It is obvious today the America has defaulted on this promissory note in so far as her citizens of color are concerned. / Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, American has given the Negro people a bad check; a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds."

하지만 오늘날 미국이, 적어도 유색인들에게만은 이 약속 어음에 대해 지불이행을 하지 않고 있음이 명백합니다./ 미국은 이 신성한 의무를 이행하지 않고 흑인들에게 '잔고 부족'이라는 도장이 찍힌 채 되돌아오는 불량어음을 주어왔습니다.

 But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. / We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. / And so we've come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.

We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. / This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. / Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy; / now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation of the sunlit path of racial justice; / now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood; / now is the time to make justice for all God's children.

▷ gradualism : 점진주의 (급격한 방법을 피하고 순서대로 서서히 목적을 달성하려는 태도나 경향)

▷ desolate valley : 황량한 계곡 

▷ segregation : 인종차별 

 

It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. / This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. / Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. And those who hope that Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content, will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual.

 이 나라가 현재의 긴박함을 간과한다면 돌이킬 수 없는 실책을 범하는 것입니다. / 찌는 듯한 여름 날씨와 같은 흑인들의 정당한 불만은 자유와 평등이라는 서늘한 가을이 올 때까지 결코 식지 않을 것입니다. / 1963년은 끝이 아니라 시작에 불과합니다. '흑인들이 울분을 터뜨릴 필요는 있지만 이제 만족할 것이다'라고 바라는 사람은, 확실한 각성을 하게 될 것입니다.

There will be neither rest not tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. / The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.

 흑인들에게 시민으로서의 권리가 보장될 때까지 미국에는 휴식도 평온도 없을 것입니다. / 폭동의 회오리 바람은 정의가 실현되는 광명의 날이 올 때까지 국가의 기반을 계속 흔들어 놓을 것입니다.

But there is something that I must say to my people, who stand on the worn threshold which leads into the palace of justice./ In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds.

 그러나 나는 정의의 궁전으로 가는 문턱에 서 있는 나의 동료들에게 말하지 않을 수 없습니다./ 우리는 합법적인 지위를 차지하는 과정에서 그릇된 행위로 죄를 범하는 일이 있어서는 절대로 안 된다는 것을 말입니다.

 

 Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. / We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plain of dignity and discipline. / We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. / Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.

 자유에 대한 우리의 갈증을 해소하기 위해서 증오와 고통의 잔에 담긴 물을 마시지는 맙시다. / 우리는 항상 존엄과 규율이라는 숭고한 가치를 지키면서 우리는 투쟁을 계속해야 합니다. / 우리는 이전과 다른 전혀 새로운 방식의 항의가 물리적 폭력으로 전락하는 것을 허용해서는 안됩니다. / 거듭거듭 말하거니와, 우리는 육체적 힘과 영혼의 힘이 만나는 웅대한 고지로 올라가야 합니다.

The marvelous new militancy, which has engulfed the Negro community, must not lead us to a distrust of all white people. / For many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. / And they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound of our freedom. / We cannot walk alone. And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. / We cannot turn back.

 흑인들이 빨아들이고 있는 놀라운 투지가 모든 백인에 대한 불신으로 이어져서는 안 됩니다. / 왜냐하면 많은 우리의 백인 형제들은 오늘 그들이 이 자리에 와 있다는 것이 증명해 주듯이, 그들의 운명이 우리의 운명과 한데 묶여 있고, / 그들의 자유가 우리의 자유와 한데 엉켜 있다는 것을 깨닫고 있기 때문입니다. / 우리끼리만 걸을 수 없습니다. 그리고 걸어갈 때 우리는 언제나 앞으로 나아갈 것을 맹세해야 합니다. / 우리는 뒤돌아 설 수 없습니다.

 

There are those who are asking the devotees of Civil Right, "When will you be satisfied?" / We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality; / we can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities; / we cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one; / we can never be satisfied as long as the our children are stripped of their selfhood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating "For White Only;" / we cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and the Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No! No, / we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until "justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty steam."

I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. / Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. / Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. / You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive. / Go back to Mississippi; Go back to Alabama; Go back to South Carolina; Go back to Georgia; Go back to Louisiana; Go back to the slums and ghettos of our Northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. / Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.

나는 여러분 중 몇몇은 크나큰 시련과 고초를 겪으며 이곳에 왔다는 것을 잘 알고 있습니다. / 여러분 중에는 비좁은 감방에서 방금 풀려난 사람들도 있습니다. / 또 어떤 사람들은 자유를 요구하면 처형의 폭풍우에 시달리고 경찰들의 무자비한 행위로 비틀거리게 되는 지역에서 왔습니다. / 여러분들은 고통을 겪는 데는 베테랑이 되었습니다. 이 부당한 고통에 대해 보상받게 되리라는 신념을 가지고 계속 나아갑시다. / 미시시피로 돌아가십시오. 앨라바마로 돌아가십시오. 사우스 케롤라이나로 돌아가십시오. 조지아로 돌아가십시오. 루이지애너로 돌아가십시오. 북부 도시의 빈민가와 달동네로 돌아가십시오. 이러한 상황은 변화될 수 있고, 또 변화될 것이라는 믿음을 갖고 돌아가십시오. / 절망의 계곡에서 허우적 거리지 맙시다.

 

So I say to you, my friends, that even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, / I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream, / that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed, "we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." / I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaves owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. / I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the head of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. / I have a dream my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but the content of their character.

 나는 오늘 나의 친구인 여러분들에게 우리가 오늘도, 내일도 그런 어려움을 겪을지라도 이렇게 말하겠습니다. / 나에게는 여전히 꿈이 있다고.. 그것은 어메리컨 드림 속에 깊숙이 뿌리박힌 꿈입니다. / 언젠가 이나라가 봉기하여, 이 나라가 믿고 있는 "우리는 모든 인간은 평등하게 태어났다는 사실을 자명하다고 생각한다."는 말의 참뜻을 실행하게 될 날이 반드시 오리라는 꿈을 나는 갖고 있습니다. / 나에게는 꿈이 있습니다. 언젠가는 조지아 주의 붉은 언덕 위에서 노예였던 사람들의 후손과 노예를 소유했던 사람들의 후손이 형제들이 앉는 식탁에서 함게 앉게 되리라는 꿈이 있습니다. / 나에게는 꿈이 있습니다. 불의의 열기가 이글거리는 미시시피 주조차도 언젠가 자유와 정의의 오아시스로 변할 것이라는 꿈이 있습니다. / 나에게는 꿈이 있습니다. 나의 네 명의 아이들도 피부색이 아니라 개성에 의해서 능력이 판단되는 나라에 살게 될 날이 있을 것이라는 꿈이 있습니다.

I have a dream that one day down in Alabama-with us vicious racists, with its Governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification-one day right there in Alabama, little black boy and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

 지금은 악의적인 인종차별주의들이 있으며 주지사의 입에서 주권 우위설과 무효라는 말만 쏟아져 나오는 바로 저 앨라배마 주에서도, 흑인 소년소녀들이 백인 소년소녀들과 형제자매로서 손을 잡게 될 날이 오리라는 꿈이 있습니다!

I HAVE A DREAM TODAY! 

오늘 나에게는 꿈이 있습니다.

 

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low. The rough places will be plain and the crooked places will be made straight, "and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together."

 나에게는 꿈이 있습니다. 언젠가 모든 계곡이 메워지고, 모든 언덕과 산이 깍이고, 울퉁불퉁한 곳은 평탄하게 되고 휘어진 곳은 곧게 되어 신의 영광이 이루어지고 모든 사람은 함께 그것을 보게 될 것이라는 꿈이 있습니다.

 

This is our hope. This the the faith that I go back to the South with. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope. / With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. / With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day. And this will be the day. / This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with new meaning, "My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my father died, land of the pilgrim's pride, from every mountain side, let freedom ring." And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.

 이것이 우리의 희망입니다. 이것이 우리가 남부로 돌아갈 때 지니고 가야 할 믿음입니다. / 이러한 믿음을 가지고 우리는 절망의 산을 깎아 희망의 돌을 다듬을 수 있습니다. / 이 믿음을 가지고 우리는 시끄러운 불협화음을 아름다운 형제애라는 교향곡으로 바꿀 수 있습니다. / 이 믿음으로 우리는 함께 일하고, 함께 기도하고, 함께 투쟁하고, 함께 감옥에 가고, 함께 자유를 위해 일어설 수 있습니다. 언젠가는 우리가 자유로워지리라는 것을 알고 있습니다. / 바로 이날이 하느님의 모든 자녀들이 "나의 조국이여. 너는 향기로운 자유의 나라이니, 나는 너를 노래하리라. 우리 선조들이 죽어간 땅, 순례자들이 자랑스러워한 이 땅이여, 모든 산줄기에 자유가 울려 퍼지리라!" 하는 노래를 새로운 의미로 부르게 될 날입니다. 그리고 미국이 위대한 국가가 되려면, 이것은 반드시 실현되어야 합니다.

 

So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops to New Hampshire; / let freedom ring from the mightly mountains of New York; / let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania; / let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado; / let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California. But not only that. Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain Georgia; / let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee; / let freedom ring from every hill and mole hill of Mississippi. "From every mountainside, let freedom ring."

 그러므로 뉴햄프셔의 거대한 산꼭대기로부터 자유가 울려 퍼지게 합시다./ 뉴욕의 웅대한 산봉우리에서 자유가 울려 퍼지게 합시다./ 펜실베니아의 높은 앨리게니 산맥에서 자유가 울려 퍼지게 합시다./ 콜로라도의 눈덮인 로키산맥에서 자유가 울려 퍼지게 합시다./ 캘리포니아의 구불구불한 산꼭대기에서도 자유가 울려 퍼지게 합시다. /그것뿐이 아닙니다.조지아의 스톤 산에서도 자유가 울려 퍼지게 합시다. / 테네시의 룩아웃 산에서도 자유가 울려 퍼지게 합시다./ 미시시피의 모든 언덕과 둔덕에서 자유가 울려 퍼지게 합시다. 모든 산기슭에서 자유가 울려 퍼지게 합시다.

 

And when this happens, and when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants, and Catholics, will be able to join in hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual: "Free at last, free at last; thank God Almighty, we are free at last."

 그리고 이렇게 될 때, 우리가 자유를 울려 퍼지게 할 때, 우리가 모든 가정과 읍내에서, 모든 주와 도시에서 우리가 자유를 울려 퍼지게 할 때, 우리는 하느님의 모든 자녀들, 흑인이든 백인이든, 유태인이든 비유태인이든, 프로테스턴트든 카톨릭이든, 모든 하느님의 자녀들이 "마침내 자유를 찾았네! 마침내 자유를! 전능하신 하느님 감사합니다. 우리는 마침내 자유의 몸이 되었네!" 하는 오래된 흑인 영가를 손잡고 부를 그날을 앞당길 수 있을 것입니다.
